When Kerry and Luke began the search for their wedding venue, they happened upon the idea of doing a mini-destination wedding. A wedding location that was a drivable distance for friends and family, yet far enough to create the feeling of a get-away. My hometown of Dubuque, Iowa offered Kerry and Luke the quaint historic old river-town feel they were imagining. Along the banks of the Mississippi, the downtown Dubuque area provided a unique scenic and historic location for their June wedding.
Kerry began her wedding morning with her family and bridesmaids gathered at Novelty Iron Work Loft; a beautifully rehabbed early 20th century industrial building that one time employed 2,500 Dubuquers. The building is now being utilized by commercial/retail spaces, residential condos, and Air B’n’B units. The original brick walls made just a stunning backdrop to the morning’s activities. One of my favorite moments of the day happened just before Kerry and Luke shared their first look. As Kerry made her way to the ground floor, I noticed a large room next door that was about 75% complete with construction. With the large antique windows and charming antique brick, the light shining in the room was absolutely perfect to capture Kerry as a stunning bride. We MAY have climbed underneath the caution tape to capture a few bridal portraits and I am so glad we did! The time had come, Kerry was going to marry the love of her life and in just the moments before seeing him, Kerry just radiated the happiness she had in her heart.
The planning may have begun a year ago, but the one thing you can never plan for in the Midwest is the unpredictable spring weather. Mother Nature showed her unpredictability with clouds and heat, wind and rain, and pockets of radiant sunshine throughout Kerry and Luke’s wedding day. Lucky for us the rain had perfectly held out for all of our portraits as well as the outdoor ceremony. One large down pour at dinner and the clouds made way for beautiful sunny skies at sunset. We even had the perfect opportunity for Kerry and Luke to take a walk along the river walk and enjoy the beginning of their forever!
Congratulations to Kerry & Luke, we were so honored to be there to share in your day and are so excited to share our favorite moments with you.
A special thanks to all the vendors who made Kerry & Luke’s day beautiful.
